SNP man's eight point pledge to electors

East Lothian's SNP Westminster candidate has committed to an eight point code of responsibility if he gets elected.

Andrew Sharp said: "Given the shambles over MP's expenses and accountability, I want to tell the voters in East Lothian about how I intend to keep them informed of my actions should I be elected to the House of Commons.

"It is vital that MPs should be accessible to their electorate, and that the electorate should know what their MP is doing and spending on a regular basis.

"Everyone who works in this country has a responsibility to adhere to their terms and conditions of employment. I don't see why it should be different for MPs, especially as the taxpayer is footing the bills.

"I am therefore more than happy to provide the following guidelines for the information of the East Lothian voters. Needless to say, reasonable and sensible suggestions from the people of the county will be welcomed and considered.

"To the best of my knowledge, not many candidates have decided to commit themselves formally to following a code of practices. I hold the view that the electorate and people of East Lothian deserve to know what they are getting from their MP.

"To that end, I give the people of East Lothian the following assurances:

I WILL hold regular surgeries in the constituency, aiming to visit main towns at least once a month, hopefully more, subject to engagements.

I WILL travel as economically as I can, whenever possible.

I WILL always stand up for East Lothian, and do what is best for local industries, jobs, pensioners, families and communities.

I WILL publish any expenses claims, and only claim for what I need to do the job effectively.

I WILL live in the constituency.

SUBJECT to confidentiality I will publish my work diary so that the people of East Lothian know what I am doing on a daily basis.

I WILL work in the constituency when I'm not in London or when I'm with my family.

I WILL respond within five days to constituents' legitimate queries and communications."
