SNP ‘using council staff as political footballs’ in East Lothian

The SNP group on East Lothian Council has been accused of “playing politics” with people’s jobs.

Councillor Michael Veitch (Con), depute council leader, slammed the Nationalists after they put forward a motion calling for discussions to be opened up with the Joint Trades’ Union around implementation of a No Compulsory Redundancy Scheme for council workers.

They also urged that the council report back with recommendations on implementation of a No Compulsory Redundancy Policy.

Councillor Veitch said: “We have introduced a voluntary redundancy scheme in an effort to reduce expenditure and to ensure the council lives within its means. I certainly hope this means compulsory redundancies are not required but it would be foolhardy to tie our hands at this stage, and the SNP group know this full well. I think they should stop using employees of this council as a political football.”
