Six arrested as police target East Lothian drug dealers

A further six people have been arrested and charged as part of an ongoing drugs operation in East Lothian.

Operation Ergot saw officers in the Musselburgh and Fa’side wards carry out a series of house searches during a week of action targeting drug dealers in the area.

A 42-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man were arrested and charged on February 4 after police recovered personal quantities of cannabis and heroin at an address in Northfield, Tranent.

The following day officers searched a home in East Loan, Prestonpans, and dealer quantities of cannabis were seized along with various cultivation paraphernalia. A 25-year-old woman was charged with alleged drug offences.

On February 7, a 33-year-old man was charged following the search of a property in Prestonpans High Street.

Dealer quantities of cannabis were recovered along with a number of pills, which have been sent for analysis.

A 44-year-old woman was then arrested on February 8 after officers seized personal quantities of cannabis from an address in Gardiners Close, Cockenzie. A white powder was also recovered from within and is currently being assessed.

Police stopped an 18-year-old man in Delta Road, Musselburgh, on the same day and recovered personal quantities of cannabis. The man was subsequently charged.

All of the individuals arrested during this enforcement phase will appear in court at a later date.

Sergeant Derek MacDonald who is leading on Operation Ergot said: “As this past week’s activity has shown, we continue to receive vital intelligence from our communities on varied levels of drug crime and are responding accordingly.

“Drugs blight our communities and whenever anyone is identified for being involved in their production or distribution they will be robustly dealt with and any assets they have obtained through criminal means will be seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

“Anyone with information relating to drug crime in their area can contact their local policing team or alternatively report the matter anonymously via the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
