Scientists get a buzz out of latest discovery

Researchers in Musselburgh have discovered that honey produced in Portobello is as effective in the fight against deadly bacteria as the world famous Manuka honey from New Zealand.

A team from Queen Margaret University found that if used in high concentrations, the Portobello variety was equal to Manuka honey in killing some common strains of bacteria which cause wound infections.

The pilot research study investigated the effects of both honeys on Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and E coli, all of which are known to infect wounds and present particular problems for hospitals.

The local honey came from beehives kept in Portobello Community Orchard which is maintained by PEDAL, a small community organisation.

The QMU study showed that Portobello honey has specific qualities - it was acidic, contained hydrogen peroxide and plant polyphenols and showed antioxidant activity - all of which are important in the killing of bacteria.
