Rustlers strike stealing pregnant ewe from farm at East Fortune

Sheep theft.

Sheep theft.

Police have appealed for information after sheep rustlers stole a pregnant ewe from East Fortune Farm last week - just weeks before she was due to give birth to twin lambs.

A frantic two hour search of fields around the farm for the missing animal called ‘Bonnie’ ended in horror when torn wool strands and a pool of blood was discovered eight feet down a stone wall.

Jane Brand, whose husband Grant and father-in-law James own the farm, described the incident which happened last Wednesday night as “barbaric” and thinks the ewe could have been taken and slaughtered for a butcher or someone’s freezer.

She explained: “We can only think that dogs were used to catch them as another ewe was showing signs of torn wool from her rear and can only hope that stress has not affected any of the other ewes, and their unborn lambs.

“How are animal breeders of any level meant to secure their stock? It is shocking that gangs of poachers are crawling round the countryside looking at your stock and watching them.”
