Racecourse row takes new twist

East Lothian Provost, Councillor Sheena Richardson, has been appointed the new chairman of the Musselburgh Joint Racing Committee.

She was elected to the position by her fellow council-appointed directors on the committee – Depute Provost Roger Knox and Councillors Barry Turner and Kenny McLeod. She replaces Independent Councillor John Caldwell who was controversially ousted in December of last year.

The joint racing committee oversees the administration of Musselburgh Racecourse and is made up of representatives from East Lothian Council and the Lothian Racing Syndicate Ltd.

Investigate

The post of joint racing committee chairman is different from that of racecourse chairman, which is currently held by a Lothian Racing Syndicate member, John Prideaux. Councillor Caldwell had previously held both posts.

The Standards Commission has been asked to investigate complaints about the way in which Councillor Caldwell was sacked as chairman of Musselburgh Racecourse.

Mr Caldwell, who believes he was ousted from the post to make way for SNP Councillor Kenny McLeod, has asked the Standards Commission to investigate the way in which the decision was taken.

Representatives

He said: "Bearing in mind how this situation was created, it would have attracted more bad publicity for the SNP/LibDem administration if they agreed to appoint Councillor McLeod.

"So this decision by the four councillor representatives was not a surprise, although the decision should have been made at the MJRC board meeting, not behind closed doors."
