Pubs’ plight aired in debate
Fiona O’Donnell MP used a House of Commons debate to highlight the problems many tenant landlords in the East Lothian have been facing with large pub companies (PubCos) - the branded chains of pubs which account for the majority of pubs in the UK.
She emphasised the importance of pubs to local communities, including the Winton Arms in Pencaitland where she lives, and the negative experiences of some local landlords.
The East Lothian MP highlighted the example of the Tyneside Tavern in Haddington where the landlord Neil Forbes finally decided to give up his tenancy after a lengthy dispute with the pub company.
Ms O’Donnell is also backing calls for a statutory code to regulate the relationship between large PubCos and their tenants and licencees and for tenants to be allowed to choose between a tied and non-tied option, to ensure fair and open business opportunities for tenants and small brewers alike.
