Prison for Wallyford man who attempted to rob shop assistant
The man behind a bungled robbery attempt at a shop in Musselburgh has been jailed for 20 months.
Desperate Aaron Boyle needed money to settle his drug debts when he confronted a female assistant at knife-point.
The 22-year-old appeared at Haddington Sheriff Court last month when his case was adjourned to allow him to be assessed for a drug treatment and testing order.
But when he returned last Wednesday, Sheriff Peter Braid said he could see no alternative to imprisonment, given the nature of the offence.
Boyle (23), 12 Fa’side Buildings, Wallyford, had previously admitted assaulting employee Ann McLaren, with his face partially concealed, while she was working at RS McColl in Delta Drive on December 7.
The charge, on indictment, involved brandishing a knife at her, forcing her backwards into the shop, following her behind the till, repeatedly demanding money and attempting to take money from the till.
He eventually left the shop empty-handed after being unable to open the till, the court was told.
