Prestonpans man in court

Scott Howie at Haddington Sheriff Court

Scott Howie at Haddington Sheriff Court

Police officers have been authorised to seize and destroy a dog wanted for attacks on two delivery drivers.

Scott Howie, the owner of the jet black Staffordshire terrier, was banned from owning a dog when he appeared at Haddington Sheriff Court last week.

The uncontrollable dog – named Panther – is now missing after Howie gave the animal away to a “stranger” following the assaults on a fast food delivery driver and a postman.

Sheriff Peter Braid described Howie as “irresponsible” and “reprehensible” for giving the dog away, and ordered the destruction of the dog when it is found.

The sheriff then went on to disqualify unemployed Howie from having custody of a dog for a period of five years.

The 22-year-old was also fined a total of £450 for both offences.

Howie, of Prestonpans, pled guilty to two charges of being the owner of a dog that was dangerously out of control when he appeared at Haddington Sheriff Court last month.

A plea of not guilty to two further attacks by the dog on innocent bystanders was accepted by the Crown.
