Prestonpans embroidery begins to take shape
One of the first panel for the Scottish Diaspora Tapestry.
A series of beautifully stitched panels will arrive in Prestonpans next week as the Prestoungrange Arts Festival begins to build up a gigantic embroidered picture of the life of Scots abroad.
A successor to the highly acclaimed Battle of Prestonpans Tapestry, the Scottish Diaspora Embroidery is slowly taking shape in far-flung corners of the world.
Volunteers in 25 countries –from New Zealand to Lithuania, Sweden to India and Canada to Italy – are working to document their Scottish connections on a series of 150 embroidered panels.
Once completed, they will be assembled and displayed in Scotland during events for the 2014 Homecoming, as celebration of Scottish heritage and culture.
It is hoped the artwork, designed by local artist Andrew Crummy with the help of lead stitchers Yvonne Murphy and Gillian Hart, will help to bring international visitors to Prestonpans for decades to come.
