Police to use metal scanners

Police are using portable metal scanners at pubs and clubs in East Lothian in a bid to reduce incidents of violence.

The device, similar to an airport scanner, was used in Haddington last month and plans are in place to roll it out to other areas of the county in the months ahead.

Community Inspector Bob Rodriguez said: “This initiative allows the public to see that police are taking a zero tolerance approach to the carrying of offensive weapons. We had a positive reaction from licensees and patrons when we used the scanner in Haddington.

“The device can be used, without prior notification, at licensed premises throughout East Lothian over the coming weeks and months.”
