Haddington poet Peter M McCulloch has an extra special reason to celebrate Burns Day for his granddaughter Emily shares the same birthday as Scotland’s national bard.
From scribbling the odd poem on scraps of paper many years ago, Mr McCulloch has gone on to reciting his work at the Edinburgh Fringe and a Poet Laureate event.
He admits that “something must have stuck” after learning Burns poetry when he was at primary school.
And King’s Meadow Primary pupil Emily McCulloch, who will be 10 today (Friday), has followed in her creative grandad’s footsteps, winning a certificate of merit from the Robert Burns World Federation Ltd for excellence in recitation and Scottish literature.
While people across the country enjoy traditional Burns suppers of haggis, neeps and tatties, poetry and songs, a birthday surprise is planned for Emily which her grandad was keeping under wraps.
