Parents to ballot or Haddington school merger plans
Parents will now be balloted on a plan to merge two Haddington schools which educate more than 600 children.
King’s Meadow Primary in Neilson Park Road, and Haddington Infants, which moved into a new £9 million joint campus with St Mary’s RC School, could become one school under a new name in August 2013.
A meeting to discuss the proposal, which took place in the assembly hall at Knox Academy on Monday night, attracted about 70 parents. The panel included Don Ledingham, East Lothian Council’s executive director of services for people.
Parents got the chance to take part in a question and answer session about three options for the schools:
* The status quo - both schools remain separate with their own head teachers, management structures, policies and development plans.
* The schools remain separate but with a shared head teacher leading and managing both schools.
* Both schools become one school under a new name with one head teacher, management structure, policies and development plan.
A spokesperson for East Lothian Council said the minutes of the meeting would now be sent out to parents and a postal ballot would take place. It has been stressed that all schools, including St Mary’s, would stay at their present locations and the merger plan would only go ahead if there was a majority of parents in favour of the change.
