Opportunity Knox as inspiration for novel by Gifford author
Author Marie Macpherson with her new book
An East Lothian author is celebrating the publication of a historical novel which marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Knox, the founding father of the Scottish Reformation, this year.
Originally from Musselburgh, Marie Macpherson, who now lives in Gifford, has retired from academic life to pursue her interest in creative writing.
The rich history of East Lothian provides the inspiration for her fiction and the early, undocumented life of Haddington-born Knox, is captured in her fictional book ‘The First Blast of the Trumpet.’
Educated in Dalkeith and Edinburgh, Dr Macpherson gained an Honours Degree in English and Russian, and a PhD in Russian literature from Strathclyde University. She spent a year at Moscow State University in the former Soviet Union and, on returning to Scotland, she worked as an editor for Pennart Press before taking up posts at the universities of Strathclyde and Edinburgh teaching languages and literature.
