A WRITER from Tranent has scooped a top accolade for his work.

Billy Graham, a member of the Haddington Writers’ Group, was named Writer of the Year in an annual competition organised by the Tyne & Esk Writers.

He fought off fierce competition from prose writers and poets with his “imaginative and poignant” story ‘Mackenzie Point.’ The judges were unanimous in their praise of his work, and suggested that the story would make a great piece for radio.

Judith Stewart from Haddington won the poetry section with ‘The Shed.’ Her poem, described as “sad, but not sentimental,” captured the memories of a wife as she visits the shed of her late husband which contained his woodworking tools. The runner-up was ‘Touchstone’ by Lesleymay Miller from Dunbar, and ‘The snow that should not be’ by Ian Murphy from Haddington was commended.
