Obituary: Victor Lough
Victor Lough, one of East Lothian’s first countryside rangers, died on Monday at Belhaven Hospital in Dunbar after long illness.
Mr Lough, who was brought up at Lammermuir Crescent, Dunbar, retired from the job in July 2008 at the age of 65. He had clocked up 33 years service.
He covered the east section of the county - from Garvald to Dunglass taking in historic Traprain Law, which was one of his great joys, Dunbar east beach and Barns Ness with its rewnowed geology and fossils.
An inquiring mind about everything around him led to his ranger career and over the years he shared his wide knowledge of geology, archaeology, natural history and astronomy in a fun and interesting way with thousands of schoolchildren and adults alike through talks, classes and summer activities organised by his employer, East Lothian Council.
He was responsible for keeping the east section in tip top shape for visitors to enjoy and was approached by the public on a range of issues.
