Obituary - Ian Swanston

The death occurred recently of well-known North Berwick resident Ian Swanston at the age of 80.

Born and bred in the town, he was very active in the Rovers/Scouts as a boy, playing the base drum for the North Berwick Scout Pipe Band. In his school days, he took up golf for a few years and would develop a passion for the game again later in life.

As a teenager he started sailing, an interest he continued after his National Service and beyond. He built and raced GP14’s in the 1950s, finally progressing to cruiser races, the last of which was a Saddler 25 called Corsair.

Mr Swanston became Commodore of the East Lothian Yacht Club in the mid 1980s and was part of the team that built the club to be renowned hosts for major UK and international dinghy regattas.

He was also an active member of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in North Berwick for many years.

Full tribute in this week’s East Lothian News. On sale now.
