World gannet expert Dr Bryan Nelson MBE has been awarded an honorary role at the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick.

He has retired from the charity’s board of trustees but his stalwart support has been recognised with his appointment as special ornithological adviser for the award-winning visitor attraction.

Between 1960 and 1963, Dr Nelson, a zoology graduate from St Andrew’s University, lived in a wooden hut on the Bass Rock working on the behaviour and ecology of the Atlantic gannet.

He then headed to two uninhabited Galapagos Islands to study red-footed, masked and blue-footed boobies, which are close relatives of gannets.

This was followed by a spell on the Peruvian guano islands to look at the Peruvian booby.
