New sand and gravel quarry gets go-ahead
A plan for a sand and gravel quarry near Dunbar was given approval this week despite one protester questioning if the area was East Lothian's "toxic dumping ground?"
Lesley Lyons of Skateraw Cottages told a meeting of East Lothian Council's planning committee: "We already have a nuclear power station, railway siding for nuclear waste, cement works which was going to be reinstated as something else but is now a landfill site, a windfarm behind us, the prospect of another four wind turbines in front of us, a proposed incinerator and now another quarry. It is not that we are NIMBYs, Not In My Back Yard, its just we are fed up — it's always in our back yard."
In an impassioned plea to councillors to turn down the application
for quarrying by Collier Quarrying And Recycling Ltd at Skateraw Farm, she said a previous quarry had now been filled in and reinstated.
Factors
Nine councillors voted in favour of the plan which was recommended for approval by planning officers and attracted 15 written objections.
Councillor Paul McLennan felt there was "too much dubiety" over a policy point which stated that the amenity of the area would not be harmed by factors such as noise, dust and vibration.
He said there were "no significant" community or local benefits.
