Musselburgh woman claimed benefits while working

Checks on staff at an East Lothian care home led benefit fraud investigators to a disabled woman who had failed to declare she was working.

Over a period of 10 months, Karen Buchanan-Turnbull received Incapacity Benefit worth £3,000, none of which she was entitled to.

The accused, of 45 Pinkie Avenue, Musselburgh, was accompanied by a sign language interpretor for the deaf when she appeared at Haddington Sheriff Court last Wednesday.

The 47-year-old first offender was placed on a community payback order, requiring her to carry out 75 hours of unpaid work within three months.

She admitted failing to notify the Department of Work and Pensions that she was in employment and earning money between September 2011 and July last year.
