Burgh joiner Jimmy Campbell has decided to lay down his hammer and chisel after maintaining some of the nation’s most famous historic buildings for the past 16 years.

A keen advocate of traditional skills in building conservation, Jimmy recently retired from his job with Historic Scotland.

Since joining the agency in 1997, he has passed on his knowledge and skills to numerous apprentice joiners and carpenters.

While mainly responsible for the joinery maintenance at Holyrood Palace, Jimmy’s skills were such that he was in high demand for projects across Scotland.

His work included constructing new wooden structures such as a new bridge for Craignethan Castle in Lanarkshire, doors and window frames for Craigmillar Castle, a gun carriage for Rothesay Castle and replica Lorimer tables for the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle.

He also provided access ramps for Holyrood Abbey, St Margaret’s Chapel and Trinity House.

In 2009, Jimmy hand carved a replica of the James V Crown for a new finial for Her Majesty’s Royal Marquee and had the honour of meeting The Queen at Holyrood Palace garden party the same year.
