Musselburgh community faces Brunton price hike

Charities and voluntary groups in Musselburgh could be priced out of their own building by new hire charges being introduced for the Brunton Hall.

The refurbished main hall, with its state-of-the-art auditorium and function suite, was unveiled by East Lothian Council last week following a £3.7m redevelopment project.

But fears have been voiced by local councillor Stuart Currie that community groups will be left out in cold as the council bids to recoup its investment.

It follows a decision to increase hire charges for the main hall and supper rooms, while at the same time cutting the discount applied to charities and voluntary groups from 50 per cent to 20 per cent.

Consultants hired by the council to prepare a pricing model for the revamped hall concluded that a 50 per cent reduction was “too high and results in a hire charge that does not reflect the high quality of services and facilities that are now available.”
