Mass moves from Wallyford as priest leaves

Wallyford’s only Catholic church has not closed says the local canon, but last week’s mass was the last there “for the meantime”.

St James’ Oratory on Salters Road has served the local community since 1986, when a former policeman’s house in the village was converted into the present oratory thanks to the fundraising efforts of parishioners. It held one mass a week - every Saturday evening.

However, the departure of Father Paul Francis last month has led to an end of services there, with no other priests available locally to cover the parish.

From now on parishioners in the village will have to go to Our Lady of Loretto in Musselburgh or St Gabriel’s in Prestonpans.

Canon Joseph McMullan, the Dean for Catholic churches in the Musselburgh area, was quick to point out that this did not mean the end of St James’ Oratory.
