Male suicide rate doubles in a year in East Lothian

The number male suicides has doubled in East Lothian, making it the biggest total in 30 years.

The rate for women continues to be higher than the Scottish average, an East Lothian Council report also revealed on Tuesday.

The findings emerged the same week the Scottish Association for Mental Health launched its ‘Two Too Many’ campaign aimed at raising awareness of suicide.

In 2011, 18 men committed suicide in the county – nine more than the previous year.

Murray Leys, head of adult wellbeing, told a meeting of the policy and performance review committee, that this was the largest total in East Lothian in 30 years, although it was still below the Scottish rate.

There were four suicides for women which was down from five the previous year. But, despite the low numbers, this rate continues to be higher than the national rate for Scotland.
