Job cut fears at council

Job cuts at East Lothian Council remain a distinct possibility as the local authority awaits the outcome of the 2010 Comprehensive Spending Review — due to be announced by the UK Government next month.

A central factor in determining the funding available to the Scottish Government, the review is expected to be announced by the end of October. By December, levels of grant funding will have been announced to all 32 councils in Scotland.

Sandra Kennie, branch secretary of Unison, said: "It is just a waiting game at the moment — it's a case of 'no news is good news'."

Managers

On the issue of possible job cuts, she added: "Every local authority will be affected and in East Lothian we are no different to the others."

An East Lothian Councila spokesman said: "We have no idea what lies ahead, and because of that, senior managers are not making any comments regarding implications for staffing."
