When Margaret Findlay moved into her Prestonpans home 26 years ago, little did she know it would come with its own unusual job.

A feature in the garden of the house in East Loan was gauge used by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Met Office to officially measure rainfall.

Although they offered to take it away, Mrs Findlay volunteered to become a rainfall observer, logging vital data for the national rainfall archive each day.

She, along with farmer Rodney Thomson, who has recorded rainfall at the Samuelston gauge near Haddington for nearly 50 years, were honoured as Scotland’s longest serving rainfall observers by SEPA and the Met Office at an awards’ ceremony in Glasgow.
