Impact on Honest Toun of waste incinerator is feared
Musselburgh residents are demanding to be kept informed of plans to build an "energy from waste" super incinerator at Millerhill, on the boundary between Midlothian and East Lothian.
Members of Musselburgh and Inveresk Community Council fear the development — being considered as a joint project by Midlothian Council and neighbouring Edinburgh City Council — will have a major impact on the town.
Vice-chairman Alan Hay is angry that Musselburgh residents are being kept in the dark, while a public meeting is planned in Danderhall for Midlothian residents.
He said there were environmental issues associated with the development, as well as traffic concerns.
Meeting
"This is going to affect the people of Musselburgh more than those living in Midlothian or Edinburgh.
"We have not been able to get a public meeting organised in the Brunton Hall so we will have to ask someone to come to a community council meeting," Mr Hay continued.
"This could generate even more traffic in Musselburgh, close to the site of the proposed new business park at Old Craighall."
Earmarked to open by 2014, the multi-million pound waste management facility would burn household rubbish to produce electricity.
