Hopes for Musselburgh hotel’s revival

Musselburgh Arms Hotel

Musselburgh Arms Hotel

A derelict hotel in the heart of Musselburgh’s conservation area could soon be brought back into use under plans lodged with East Lothian Council.

Edinburgh-based developer Castle Properties Ltd is seeking consent to redevelop the three-storey Musselburgh Arms Hotel at 49 High Street.

The proposals would see the number of rooms increased from 12 to 15, while the public bar on the ground floor would be replaced with a cafe and hot food takeaway. The plans also involve the demolition of some buildings at the rear of the property.

Previously owned by pub operators Punch Taverns, the grade-B listed building was reported to have been sold for £150,000 at the end of 2011, after lying vacant for a number of years. It is on the Buildings at Risk register.

It has long been branded an eyesore by community councillors, concerned about its impact on the appearance of the historic conservation area.
