Haddington woman punched over lost money

A Haddington man has been been fined for punching a woman he suspected of stealing from his house.

Father-of-four James Cordiner had been drinking to excess when he attacked his neighbour at her home, Haddington Sheriff Court was told.

Appearing before Sheriff Peter Braid last Wednesday, Cordiner (37), 23 Monkmains Road, was fined £300.

He had previously admitted assaulting Laura Coutts, at 25 Monkmains Road, on January 13 by repeatedly punching her on the head to her injury.

Outlining the background to the offence, as detailed in reports prepared for the court, defence agent Colm Dempsey said it appeared money had gone missing from his client’s house.

He said the accused, perhaps wrongly, suspected the complainer of being responsible.
