Haddington man spat at police officer

A HADDINGTON man who behaved in a “filthy way” by spitting at a police officer has a piece of plastic to thank for not being sent to jail.

Matthew Abraham was lifted by police outside the town’s Gardener’s Arms after a drinking session on December 30 last year.

He was taken to Dalkeith police station where he was forced to wait for up to 90 minutes in the back of the police vehicle due to the excessive amount of custodies that evening.

But when the doors of the van were eventually opened the drunk Englishman spat at PC Colin Boyd, but fortunately he only hit the Perspex separating the pair.

Sheriff MacMillan told Abraham that if the spit had hit the officer he would be “looking at a custodial sentence”.

Abraham, 17 St Martin’s Place, pleaded guilty to assaulting PC Boyd by spitting at him during an appearance at Haddington Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
