Major traffic restrictions are set to be put in place in towns and villages along the East Lothian coast as the 142nd Open Golf Championship tees off at Muirfield, Gullane, next year.

A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order was approved by councillors to cope with the influx of thousands of visitors to the county.

The golf tournament will be hosted by the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers at Muirfield during the period Sunday, July 14, to Sunday, July 21, 2013. The championship will take place between Thursday, July 18, and Sunday, July 21.

Council leader Willie Innes said: “This is an international event that brings a lot of kudos to East Lothian. We want to make sure it is managed correctly.”

Further consultation will now take place with the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, Lothian & Borders Police and the community before the council makes a final decision.
