Greyfriar's Bobby stand-in visits North Berwick Day Centre

Blue, a stand-in for Edinburgh's famous dog Greyfriars Bobby, paid a visit to North Berwick Day centre for the elderly.

The popular 10-year-old Yorkshire terrier delighted volunteers and members, particularly Annie Briggs of Lochbridge Road, who will be 90 in February, as he will feature in a book about her lifetime experiences.

Blue, who belongs to Kit Lovie (65) of Coupar Avenue — Annie's niece — is also the mascot of the One O'Clock Gun and Time Ball Association.

Annie's 67-year-old son Brian McKenzie, who was born in North Berwick and served with the air force for 18 years, is the association's chairman and often takes part in official duties with Blue including the World Animal Day Walk in Edinburgh.

The day before his day centre visit, Blue starred in a televised wreath-laying ceremony at Greyfriars Kirkyard to mark the death of Greyfriars Bobby on January 14.

He was joined by Mr McKenzie in the guise of Colour Sergeant Scott who fed Greyfriars Bobby.

Mrs Lovie, a home help with East Lothian Council for 25 years until her retirement in November, said Blue was bought as a pup, becoming the family's fourth Yorkshire terrier.

Her husband John is treasurer of the One O'Clock Gun and Time Ball Association and they have a 33-year-old son Gavin.

She said: "We just adore Blue. He is very much part of the family and holidays are booked so we can take him. He loves going on holiday and for daily walks in the Lodge Grounds."

Mrs Lovie explained that the celebrity canine went through a leg operation last year but recovered well to continue his official duties as mascot, a position he has held for the past two years.

It is hoped that Blue will take part in the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo next year.

The book about Mrs Briggs, who regularly attends the day centre, is one of several compiled about members' lives which are kept at the facility.
