Full backing for community radio licence bid

East Lothian's community radio station is being backed by East Lothian Council in its bid for a full five year community radio licence.

Councillors unanimously approved a motion to formally write to licence regulator OFCOM expressing support for East Coast FM's application.

Councillor Paul McLennan, who proposed the motion which was seconded by Provost Sheena Richardson, explained: "At the end of 2009, for a trial period of four weeks, the station secured a short broadcast licence for a programme of daytime and evening broadcasts ranging from community-based topics to a wide variety of entertainment shows.

"Programmes were broadcast by experienced ex-commercial radio presenters and local volunteers.

Phenomenal

"Since East Coast FM first started broadcasting, the station has received thousands of text messages and e-mails of support together with over 60,000 live listen hits and nearly a quarter of a million website hits."

Ian Robertson of East Coast FM told the meeting the results had been "phenomenal," adding: "In the first four weeks they were just off the richter scale."

He explained that the station has 43 volunteers, from a 13-year-old pupil at Loretto to OAPs.
