Forth coast oil spill fears as Government dithers
EFFORTS to protect East Lothian's delicate coastline from the threat of oil spills have, at least in the short term, been scuppered by the UK Government.
County representatives have expressed their concern at a decision — announced by Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport, Mike Penning — to review proposed legislation aimed at regulating ship-to-ship oil transfers in the Firth of Forth.
East Lothian Council has reaffirmed its opposition to the controversial practice, based on the increased risk of pollution and the potential for serious consequences should any spill occur.
At a meeting of East Lothian's full council, elected members were unanimous in their criticism of the decision.
Crucial
Councillor Stuart Currie (SNP) said: "One in five jobs in East Lothian are dependent on tourism. Why on earth would you take any sort of risk whatsoever, when 20 per cent of our working population might be affected?"
Labour councillor Norman Hampshire told the meeting: "It is really frightening that big business can lobby Ministers and get them to suspend crucial legislation that is now in danger of being watered down."
