Fire chiefs thank East Lothian residents

FIRE chiefs have thanked the public for helping make the Bonfire night celebrations across the East Lothian area safer.

On November 5, Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service only had to extinguish three bonfires for safety reasons in East Lothian, which is half of last year’s figure. The period from October 31 to November 6 also saw a big reduction in activity from 13 incidents in 2011 to six incidents in 2012.

David Lockhart, local senior officer for Midlothian and East Lothian, was delighted with this year’s bonfire night.

He said: “I’d like to thank the public for considering their own safety and that of their property and others over this period.

“We were pleased to see that many of the bonfires we attended were being supervised by adults and held in safe places. In these cases, we were able to leave the scene without any action being taken freeing us to respond to events that were more serious.”
