Education changes in East Lothian to ease supply problem
EAST Lothian Council have made changes to help end the issue of being unable to find cover for absent school teachers.
In the past six months, the council’s HR department struggled to source supply staff to cover vacancies in primary schools. This has resulted in 36% of requests for supply being unfulfilled in the county, with similar figures across Scotland.
On Tuesday, East Lothian Council’s Education Committee approved recommendations to boost the number of supply teachers on both the primary and secondary schools’ list.
Before the changes, existing teachers would complete a new application form and undergo an interview to join the supply list. The report before the committee this week believed this was “too onerous” and was putting teachers off applying.
Now existing teachers will simply complete a change of circumstances form and be provided with a supporting statement from their current headteacher.
