East Lothian health chief blasted.

EAST Lothian Council has come under fire from Iain Gray, local Labour MSP, for increased "bed blocking."

He described an explanation from Councillor Jacquie Bell, the county's health and social care leader, in a recent article in a national newspaper as "an abdication of responsibility."

She is quoted as saying "we don't have a lot of care home places here."

Mr Gray said East Lothian has the worst rate in the whole of Scotland for "bed blocking" — patients stuck in hospital because they are waiting for a care home place or care package at home.

Infuriated

Mr Gray said: "Councillor Bell's comments have infuriated the action group who campaigned to prevent the closure of Cockenzie House Nursing Home."

Councillor Bell declined to comment.
