East Lothian’s budget is set
A pledge of greater investment in the local economy and funding to protect key local services has been made as East Lothian Council approved its spending plans for the next three years.
Council tax bills will be frozen at the current level for the sixth year in a row, with the Band D council tax for 2013/14 remaining at £1,117.62.
But a lengthy, heated political debate ensued at the budget meeting in Haddington on Tuesday, with SNP opposition councillors hitting out at cuts proposed by the Labour/Conservative/Independent coalition ruling group.
Fears were raised about capital projects including refurbishment of the Abbey Care Home in North Berwick, a new day care centre for Haddington and investment in Prestongrange Museum at Prestonpans which were listed as “under consideration for future years.” A total of £150,000 for a sports hall at Port Seton has been included in 2015/16 but SNP councillors later said it had “effectively been binned.”
