East Lothian licence hearing call
TESCO, Newton Port, Haddington
A call has been made for a change in the law to avoid licensing hearings for East Lothian-based outlets if a national company gets slapped with a conviction elsewhere in the UK.
The county’s licensing board had to hold a premises review for Tesco stores in North Berwick, Haddington and Musselburgh last Thursday because the company was fined £10,000 at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court after admitting contravening health and safety regulations at a store in Wales.
Rudi Fruzynski, East Lothian’s licensing standards officer, explained that on June 14, 2011, an elderly customer tripped on the edge of a piece of plywood placed in the foyer of the Culverhouse Cross store.
He said the store had adopted its own procedure which was not authorised by Tesco and inconsistent with normal practice.
