More than 2,000 “at risk” properties in East Lothian’s seaside communities are set to benefit from a new coastal flood warning scheme.

The county’s first targeted flood warning service - providing users with text alerts - was launched this week by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).

Musselburgh, Prestonpans, Cockenzie, Port Seton, North Berwick, Dunbar and West Barns are among 28 new flood warning areas that have been set up along the east coast of Scotland.

The new schemes are a major development of SEPA’s successful Floodline service, which has seen more than 14,000 people sign up since its launch less than two years ago.

Those who live, work or travel in the 28 designated areas can now sign up and receive advance coastal flood warnings direct to their phone, 24 hours a day.

The aim is to give people valuable time to take action to protect their families, homes and businesses from the damage flooding can cause. It also allows people travelling through affected areas to make alternative travel arrangements if their usual travel routes have been disrupted.
