East Lothian Council remembers the fallen
A minute’s silence was observed at a meeting of East Lothian Council’s cabinet on Tuesday in tribute to a Scottish soldier was shot dead by a rogue member of the Afghan army as he played a football match on Remembrance Day.
Captain Walter Barrie (41) served with the Royal Scots Borderers, 1st Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland, which was recent granted the Freedom of East Lothian by the local authority because of its long historical links with the county.
He was playing in a match on Sunday between British soldiers and members of the Afghan National Army (ANA) at his base in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province when he was shot at close range, the Ministry of Defence said.
Capt Barrie from Glasgow, who was married with a teenage son, had been mentoring and advising a brigade of the ANA to take over security in an area of southern Afghanistan.
He had served in the army for 25 years including tours of Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo, Northern Ireland and Afghanistan in 2008. After being commissioned in 2009, he became unit welfare officer of 2 SCOTS based at Glencorse Barracks in Midlothian and was the battalion’s liaison with the local community.
Provost Ludovic Broun-Lindsay felt it appropriate for the cabinet to have a minute’s silence to pay tribute to Captain Barrie and all others as the regiment had just been given the Freedom of East Lothian.
Willie Innes, council leader, agreed it would be appropriate for the council to mark the “tragic loss” of Captain Barrie and fallen soldiers through the generations.
