East Lothian aurora receives star treatment

One East Lothian resident was counting his lucky stars this week after witnessing a rare stellar treat.

The greyness of the Scottish summer was dramatically interrupted in the early hours of Monday morning by a dazzling and colourful light show, captured on camera by amateur stargazer and professional photographer Jim Hunter.

His image of the county’s skyline - silhouetted against the Aurora Borealis - was soon being admired around the world after catching the attention of Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor.

A space weather alert issued by the British Geological Survey last Friday predicted that a solar flare the previous evening would result in increased geomagnetic activity, with an increased chance of seeing aurora displays at lower than normal latitudes.
