Dunbar’s delight at monument’s new look

The revamped Fishermen’s Monument in Dunbar has been unveiled.

Originally built in 1856, the landmark has been restored to its former glory.

The memorial held a baromater which warned the fleet of bad weather, saving many lives. The orginal barometer was replaced in 1998 with the current set of instruments. Although they are not now relied on by the fishermen, they are a reminder of the monument’s historic purpose.

The restoration project, funded by Viridor and East Lothian’s civic pride fund, was a joint effort involving members of the Shore and Harbour Neighbourhood Group, Dunbar Fishermen’s Association, Dunbar Harbour Trust and East Lothian Council.
