Dunbar lifeboat to rescue

Dunbar’s lifeboat crew raced to the rescue after a converted fishing boat drifted after losing all power in the Firth of Forth.

The 14 metre vessel called Jackie Dee had broken down on passage from Charleston in Fife to the north of Scotland at midnight on Saturday.

The two-man crew on the boat, believed to be on a delivery charter, tried for several hours to fix it before raising the alarm as they realised they had drifted miles down the coast into the sea lane of the Firth of Forth.

Coxswain Gary Fairbairn said: “The boat was about 11 miles from Torness when the coastguard asked us to help. When we got on scene, an ocean going tug the BB Troll was lying nearby in case the crew had to abandon ship.”

Two members of the Dunbar lifeboat crew were put on board to pump out the vessel and see if anything could be done to restart it. Mr Fairbairn said: “We had to tow the boat back to Dunbar with our crew on board assisting and it was 5am before we got back to Torness and refuelled.”

Dunbar crew members were back on the lifeboat a few hours later when they took part in the town’s annual Remembrance Day service and parade.
