Dunbar lifeboat crew receive bravery awards
Members of the Dunbar lifeboat crew were presented with awards for exceptional bravery. Stuart Pirie, Kevin Keillor, Brian Cleator, John Watt and mechanic Kenny Peters received medal service certificates from Admiral The Lord Boyce, chairman of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, at the charity's Scottish annual meeting in Perth.
The crewmen made a vital contribution during the rescue of two people from the stricken yacht Ouhm on the night of May 15, 2009, in severe gale force nine conditions that knocked the lifeboat on its side.
Coxswain Gary Fairbairn, who was honoured with a bronze medal for gallantry by the RNLI for his part in the rescue was also be at the ceremony to present around 50 volunteers and four fund-raising groups with honorary awards in recognition of their support for the charity.
Admiral The Lord Boyce paid tribute to the Dunbar crew, saying: "They are people who embody everything the RNLI stands for.
"Their leadership, courage and exceptional seamanship helped to save lives in thoroughly adverse weather and sea conditions.
"I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated volunteer fund-raisers and individual and corporate supporters around Scotland whose tireless efforts do so much towards raising the essential funds needed to train and equip our lifeboat crews.
"The RNLI is truly grateful for the commitment of our volunteers both at sea and ashore."
