Cover plans in place after station blaze at North Berwick

Assurances have been given that there is cover for the North Berwick area after its fire station was destroyed by a blaze this week.

A temporary base for the local part-time service is to be set up at East Lothian Council landscape and countryside site off the town’s Heugh Road as part of a contingency plan.

In the meantime, emergency cover for North Berwick is being provided by a full-time crew from McDonald Road fire station in Edinburgh, which is operating out of the Scottish Fire Service Training College at Gullane.

The update was delivered to members of North Berwick Community Council at their monthly meeting which had been due to be held at the fire station in Station Road on Tuesday evening but was switched to St Andrew Blackadder Church.

Around 40 firefighters tackled the blaze after the alarm was raised at 5.20am on Monday morning.

Craig McLaren (48), who owns Scotnews newsagents at the nearby railway station, was on his way to work when he saw smoke coming from the Station Road building.
