Councillor’s cinema visit sparks fire call drama

A TRIP to the cinema for the first time in seven years ended in drama for a councillor after fire crews were called to her house in Dunbar on Saturday.

Jacquie Bell (53), who represents the Dunbar and East Linton ward on East Lothian Council, was due to travel to Edinburgh to see a pre-booked showing of the new blockbuster ‘War Horse’ with son Huw (30).

They found they were running short of time for the journey and wouldn’t have time to eat all of their evening meal before having to go, so Jacquie took a pan of gnocchi — Italian dumplings — off the cooker ring and placed it on another at her house Braeside in High Street, Belhaven.

But although the ring was turned off, there was some residual heat which caused the pan of food to boil dry.

This activated the smoke alarm in the house and sensors in her mum’s granny flat. This was picked up by East Lothian Council’s community alarm centre in Macmerry which alerted Lothian & Borders Fire and Rescue Service at about 8.20pm.

Fire crews from Dunbar and East Linton raced to the scene and removed the pan from the property.
