College concern voiced by politicians

East Lothian’s MSP Iain Gray and MP Fiona O’Donnell are insisting that the needs of the county must be taken into account if the planned merger of Jewel and Esk College and Stevenson and Telford Colleges goes ahead later this year.

Jewel and Esk currently attracts around 60 per cent of its students from the East and Midlothian areas and the politicians are keen that the new college serves the needs of East Lothian as well as Edinburgh.

Mr Gray and Ms O’Donnell both met Jewel and Esk College Principal and Chief Executive Mandy Exley and pressed that point home.

Mr Gray said: “I was pleased to hear both the college principal and the chairman of the college board give assurances that they will make sure the interests of county college students are protected.”
