Football coaches are backing a plan for a new all-weather 3G sports pitch in North Berwick.
They highlighted the need for the facility at the monthly meeting of North Berwick Community Council in the wake of concerns from nearby residents about floodlighting and a perimeter fence.
East Lothian Council has already installed 3G facilities in Musselburgh, Tranent and Haddington, and proposes others in Dunbar, North Berwick and Prestonpans. Staff in the healthy living section at the council have been submitting lottery funding applications to sportscotland. The council also confirmed its commitment to the project, earmarked for the flood prone site at the Recreation Park, in its capital plan.
John Arbuckle, secretary of North Berwick Colts Football Club, said the club catered for about 250 children aged five to 15, and 120 adult members from various football groups in North Berwick. He explained that they were participating in the North Berwick community sports hub and one of its key aims was develop an all-weather football and rugby facility at the Greenheads Road site.
