Charter returns to Haddington
East Lothian Council archivist Fran Woodrow with the Haddington Charter signed by Robert the Bruce.
The Haddington burgh charter issued by Robert the Bruce in 1318 is now back in storage after being on public display for East Lothian’s Saltire celebrations.
The document was returned to the town from the national archives and is the oldest document in the East Lothian archive collection at the recently opened John Gray Centre in Lodge Street.
Alex Fitzgerald, East Lothian’s records’ manager, said: “In recognition of the need to strengthen the country’s economy burghs and royal burghs were granted exclusive trading rights and privileges to help boost trade and raise revenue from taxes.
“On December 6, 1318, King Robert I issued a charter to the burgh of Haddington re-affirming the exclusive rights of the burgesses in the wool and cloth tgrade, in access to supplies of local timber and in the use of common pasture.”
